What the benchmark actually contains
One page, written for ourselves before it was written for anyone else. It covers the three things USD billing genuinely costs an Australian company — the international transaction fee, which is unrecoverable; the exchange spread, which is invisible unless you go looking; and budget drift, where a fixed USD subscription quietly becomes a different AUD number every month.
It also covers the thing that is not a cost. You will see currency products sold on the promise of recovering 10% GST. For a GST-registered business that is not correct — the reverse charge means you claim it back in the same BAS either way. We say so in the document, because a benchmark that oversells its own premise is not worth reading.

Who's asking, and why
Emerge Digital builds VaultOS — a knowledge system that turns a company’s documents, decisions and runbooks into a graph an AI assistant answers from, with a citation to the exact source note. We run it on our own portfolio: 1,038 documents across six businesses as of August 2026, every answer cited.
We operate an Australian entity and pay for our own tool stack out of it, which is how this question started. Our bookkeeping already splits that stack by invoice currency, and reconciling the two halves is a monthly job nobody enjoys.
We have not built AUD usage-based billing. That is the point of the question — we would rather find out that it doesn’t matter to you than build it and discover that afterwards. Telling us it’s a rounding error is a genuinely useful answer.
